“Ostranenie” is Russian and translates in English as “making strange” or defamiliarizing in English. This theory was formulated by Viktor Shklovsky in his 1917 essay “Art as Procedure” and in few words is about seeing objects from a new point of view, noticing the landscape that are seen but unperceived by us. Our perception has become dulled, clouded by routine and culture. In this exhibition the familiar becomes unfamiliar by making it difficult for the viewer to see the connection between the image and its origin – to force the consciousness to see our surroundings from a new point of view. Sound and music is the second theme in this exhibition by exploring if and how it is possible to visualize sound and music without using sounds or music: visually aurally. Since movement of some sort is necessary for sound to exist the artwork uses still images from videos of daily life. They are then arranged as some sort of musical composition were individual components work together to form an aural experience.
